Claire Sullivan

Name and Metro: Claire Sullivan, Hawai`i 

Where are you from? I grew up in the countryside near Bloomington, Indiana and in Kailua and Manoa on O`ahu.  I also lived in France and England for 5 years.

What’s your favorite music? Depends on the moment, but perennial favorites include Billie Holiday, Paul Simon and The Cure.

What’s your favorite color? Waimanalo blue

How do you define a Forager? A forager is someone who seeks out tasty food in their immediate environs.

How did you start working at Whole Foods Market? I presented a Maui organic farm staffed by interns and scholars from Costa Rica’s EARTH University as a potential partner and supplier for Whole Foods Market when the WFM team was first exploring Maui.  I then went on to use WFM as a case study in my masters thesis.  When I got back home to Hawai`i after my studies I contacted WFM in hopes of helping the company successfully join the Hawai`i community and source local product.  I started about 7 months before our first store opened in the islands.

How long have you worked at Whole Foods? 4 years, since February 2008.

What do you look for when you’re foraging for new products? Delicious flavors wrought through thoughtful farming and production practices.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve brought to Whole Foods Market? Cage free eggs from a farm that was on the brink of shutting down, but chose to go cage free and partner with WFM instead.
